Vitamin A – Plant versus Animal

I wanted to write a short snippet about Vitamin A as the RDA has noted upper limit values for it (10,000 IU), but that is easily exceeded simply by eating a sufficient quantity of spinach (5.5 oz is over 10,000 IU). In order to be below that value, I would have had to remove spinach from my diet, but it has too many beneficial vitamins and nutrients for me to be willing to do that.

As such, I investigated a bit more and found that it’s actually animal-based Vitamin A that has these upper limits not plant-based Vitamin A, which has no limits. There’s a good article at this location discussing the differences between animal and plant-based Vitamin A.

Basically, if the Vitamin A consumed is from a retinol-based source, then the maximum value per day would be 10,000 IU (likely getting less than 3,000 IU from such sources would be ideal). If the Vitamin A consumed is not from a retinol-based source, then there is no maximum daily upper limit.

Whew, my spinach is safe! Now, I need to go eat some.

Have a good day!
